Choice Reaction Time Test

Wait for the arrow, then press ← or → (or A and D) as fast as you can. Wrong presses count as mistakes, so be quick and accurate.

Click to startAn arrow pointing left or right appears. Press the matching arrow key, or click that half of the box. Five rounds.

How the choice reaction test works

Click the box or press Space to start a round. After a random pause a large arrow appears, pointing left or right. Press the left or right arrow key, A or D, or click the matching half of the box. The timer measures from the moment the arrow is drawn on your screen to your correct press.

Pressing before the arrow appears is a false start and the round is repeated. Pressing the wrong side is counted as a mistake, and the clock keeps running until you press the correct one. After five rounds you see your average, fastest and slowest times and how many mistakes you made.

Why choice reactions matter in games

Most real game situations are choices: dodge left or right, peek or hold, shoot or reload. Simple reaction tests measure raw speed, but choice reaction tests show how quickly you turn what you see into the right action. Expect your time here to be slower than in the simple reaction time test; the gap between the two is the cost of making a decision.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

What is choice reaction time?

Simple reaction time is how fast you respond to one signal. Choice reaction time is how fast you respond when you first have to decide which of several responses is correct — here, left or right. It is always a little slower because your brain has to make that decision.

Which keys can I use?

Use the left and right arrow keys, or A and D like in many games. You can also click or tap the left or right half of the box.

What happens if I press the wrong side?

The mistake is counted and the arrow stays, so you still have to press the correct side. Your time for that round includes the wrong press, which is why accuracy matters as much as speed.

Why is this harder than the normal reaction test?

Because you cannot press until you know which way to go. Guessing gives you mistakes, and waiting gives you slower times — the skill is deciding quickly.

Is my result saved?
